Grandin Theatre
Historic Theatre
Location: Roanoke, VA
Project Type: Renovation & Expansion
Project Size: 13,600 sq.ft.
The Grandin is the Roanoke Valley’s last surviving classic movie house. After the theatre’s closing in 2001, a non-profit group, the Grandin Theatre Foundation, was organized to purchase and reopen it. To aid fundraising, Rife + Wood designed a sidewalk of precast pavers with stainless steel stars that sold for $1000 each – over 600 were sold. The theatre was fully renovated with an enlarged lobby and concessions counter, new projection and sound systems, and acoustical improvements. Two ADA-compliant toilets were added to the first floor. All work was done in compliance with the Department of Interior standards so the project could receive $350,000 in historic renovation tax credits. In 2016, Rife + Wood completed façade renovations that included a new box office and new entry doors, storefront and marble wainscot.
