Location: Roanoke, VA
Project type: New Construction
Project Size: 335,000 sq. ft.

Through a facilities assessment it was determined that Patrick Henry High School would be replaced. The new design consolidated the school into a single building with public functions located on the ground floor and academics on the second and third floor. The lower level includes gymnasiums, art facilities, a media center, and cafeteria. The academic spaces were designed utilizing a "school within a school" concept creating learning communities. Each learning community contains 12- classrooms, three science labs, a general lab, two career tech labs, faculty offices, workroom and administrative space.

Because of the nature of the facility, it was constructed in phases while the existing school remained operational. Phase One, contained the Library, Cafeteria, the core classrooms and labs, and the central heating and cooling plant. Phase Two contained the Fine Arts and Athletics and P.E. spaces. The 12 existing buildings of the original "campus-style" school were demolished as each phase of the new construction was completed. The final component of the project was a new stadium which opened in August 2007 with the Auxiliary Gym and remaining site improvements wrapping up in February 2008.
